Sonofonic Acoustic Baffles in Airport

Sonofonic Acoustic Baffles were recently installed in the newly constructed Terminal 4 at Melbourne Airport. Designed by Hassell Architects, this high-traffic, high-ceiling space required an acoustic solution that was both effective and visually striking.

Sontext’s Sonofonic Baffles were selected due to their flexibility in colour, shape, and layout. The ability to customise the form of each baffle allowed the architect to integrate acoustic control into the broader design concept without compromise. These baffles not only reduce reverberation in open areas but also help define spatial zones within the terminal.

Designed for Complex Spaces

Jacaranda Industries, based in Melbourne managed the installation. This project presented complex engineering challenges, requiring innovative fixing and suspension systems. Jacaranda developed custom methods to meet the safety, aesthetic, and acoustic performance standards of a major international airport terminal.

Why Sonofonic Baffles?

Sonofonic Acoustic Baffles are ideal for large public spaces with high ceilings, such as terminals, atriums, and lobbies. Their suspended design allows air, light, and services to move freely while absorbing sound and reducing echo. Available in multiple colours and custom shapes, they are a practical and architectural choice for managing noise in open-plan environments.

FAQs – Sonofonic Acoustic Baffles at Melbourne Airport

Question Answer
What are Sonofonic Baffles made from? They are made from a high-density fibreglass or polyester core wrapped in durable acoustic fabric or painted finishes.
Why were baffles used instead of wall panels? Terminal 4 has open-plan, high-ceiling spaces where suspended baffles provide vertical sound absorption without interfering with wall or service layouts.
Can Sonofonic Baffles be customised? Yes. This project used custom colours and shapes to align with the architect's design concept.
Who handled the installation? The baffles were installed by Jacaranda Industries, who developed custom suspension systems for this complex site.
Are these panels suitable for other large spaces? Absolutely. They’re ideal for terminals, auditoriums, sports halls, shopping centres, and other echo-prone environments.

Church Acoustics, Diffusion and Absorption

Solving Acoustic Challenges in Churches: A Tailored Approach Acoustics in church auditoriums can be tricky. The sound needs to be just right, whether it’s amplified music, clear speech, or stage presentations like choirs. Older churches, such as the grand cathedrals of Europe, didn’t focus on absorption. Instead, they relied on reflection and diffusion to create sound effects. While this worked for the architecture and audio…
